Youth Development Services
CII Care Coordinator Sergio Resendez has a passion for working with youth, especially connecting them to opportunities for growth and development. For the past three years, he has worked closely with James, a 16-year-old high school sophomore whose CII therapist encouraged him to join our afterschool basketball program.

“I majored in Sociology at Long Beach State and my main focus was institutionalized oppression and criminalization in communities of color,” said Sergio.
“I was passionate about studying these topics because I lived through these experiences.” His interest led him to begin volunteering for organizations that mentored, tutored, and guided young people toward a better path—and eventually it led him to his role at CII. “I met James as his basketball coach. At first, he acted out, but I didn’t take his actions personally,” says Sergio. “Over time, I was able to break through that barrier and really get to know James. Since then, he has developed leadership skills and joined CII’s Youth Council—a leadership program for teens by teens.”
Sergio works with James and the other members of CII’s Youth Council to plan community events throughout the year, including neighborhood clean-ups, movie and game nights, tutoring days, and other special events and field trips. For Sergio, seeing young people like James develop a passion for helping others is the best part of his job.
“I feel grateful to have the opportunity to work with youth like James. He has come such a long was since I first met him. With each new project, he has thrived and he loves helping the younger kids. He’s a remarkable young man with a bright future.”Sergio Resendez, CII Care Coordinator
